The JWL welcomes women over age 23 who are residents of York County and are interested in volunteering and committed to serving our community. Membership Information
What is Provisional Membership?
A provisional member unable to begin or complete her provisional year may be granted an extension of up to one year. Any work done in the incomplete year may not be applied to her full provisional year. She will be reinstated at the beginning of the next provisional year and will complete the course in full with that provisional class. The initiation fee is paid only once.
What are the qualifications for membership?
- The Candidate must possess qualities based on high standards required of members since the origin of the Junior Welfare League, Inc.
- The Proposed member must not be younger than 23 years of age at the time of proposal.
- The Candidate must be a resident of the Junior Welfare League’s admissions area at the time of the Provisional Course. Persons having had legal residence in the York County area for a much longer time with temporary residence elsewhere shall not have to meet this qualification for eligibility.
- The Candidate must meet the following membership criteria:
- She must demonstrate an interest in volunteerism.
- She must demonstrate an interest in developing and expanding her voluntary community participation.
- She must demonstrate her commitment to community service.
- She must possess high moral standards.
- The application must be completed in full and submitted by the deadline.
Prospective Member Process
Application, Deadline, and Fees
The application must be completed in full and turned in no later than February 28, 2025.
Application Fee: $50 (due with admission application by February 28, 2025).
Admission to Provisional Membership 2025-2026
Once the application and the non-refundable application fee have been received, the Admissions Committee will review the application. An invitation to join the JWL will be mailed to the applicant once admitted to Provisional Membership by April 2025. The invitation will include information on the Spring Dinner Welcome Reception to be held in May, for new provisional members. Other important dates are as follows:
Mini Retreat: Provisional Orientation (Will be decided by Education Chair)
Spring Dinner: May 2025
Membership Dues: $150 (Due by Sept 30th)
Agency Tours (Examples below, Provisional Class will choose 4):

- Hospice & Community Care
- York Co. Board of Disabilities
- Teen Health Center
- Keystone
- Habitat for Humanity
Expectations During Provisional Year 2025-2026
Review Handbook/Bylaws: Provisional members will receive a detailed review of the by-laws from the Bylaws Committee.
Serve on a Frost Bites Committee and complete Frost Bites placement: Committees are assigned by the President. All money raised will go to the organization chosen by the membership.
Coordinate Provisional Project: This project is designed to help an organization chosen by the provisional class.
Attend General Meetings: The President sets the General Meetings for the year. Expect to have six to eight meetings throughout the year. They are usually the third Thursday of the month. The first meeting for new provisionals is the Spring Dinner, held in May.
General Fundraiser Placement: General Fundraisers are events held to raise money for small grant applicants and are generally held in the spring. Assignments TBA by Chairman.
