The Junior Welfare League hosted its Spring Dinner on Thursday, May 21 at the Rock Hill Country Club where they awarded funds to nine local organizations.
The largest amount was given to A Place for Hope, a community resource center that provides after school programming for children, and evening education and job training for adults who live in Blackmon Road Community. A Place for Hope received $60,000, all money raised during the Junior Welfare League’s 6th annual spring market, the JeWeL of the Carolinas, held this past March. A Place for Hope will use the money to purchase a bus to transport children of the Blackmon Road Community, allowing them educational and cultural exposure. In addition, the Early Learning Partnership received $7,000 from sales of the Junior Welfare League Cookbook, Tapestry. The Early Learning Partnership purpose is to develop and promote programs that support the health and academic readiness of children birth to age 6 in York County.
Other organizations receiving grants from the Junior Welfare League include the Rock Hill Community Theater, The Haven Men’s Shelter, Habitat for Humanity of York County, Steppin’ High, the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, the Teen Health Center and the Carlisle Hardin Memorial Scholarship fund at Winthrop University. These grants were made available in large part to money raised at Twice is Nice, a boutique of gently used clothing and household goods, operated by the Junior Welfare League located off Cherry Road at 958 West Main Street in Rock Hill.
